Defensive Driving Essentials

The #1 rule: Assume everyone else will make a mistake. Drive for yourself AND for them.

Stay Alert & Scan Ahead

  • Look 12-15 seconds ahead, not just at the car in front
  • Check mirrors every 5-8 seconds—know what's around you
  • Watch for brake lights ahead to anticipate traffic
  • Identify escape routes in case you need to avoid danger

Safe Following Distance

  • 3-second rule: Pick a landmark, count 3 seconds after car ahead passes it
  • Add 1 second for rain, 2+ for snow/ice conditions
  • Double the distance if someone tailgates YOU (safer braking)
  • More space = more reaction time = fewer accidents

Eliminate Distractions

  • No phones: Texts can wait. Pull over if it's urgent
  • Set GPS before driving, not while moving
  • Eating/drinking reduces reaction time significantly
  • Passengers should help navigate, not distract

Anticipate & Predict

  • Watch body language—pedestrians looking at phones will walk
  • Cars at intersections may pull out—be ready to brake
  • Assume every car in the next lane wants to merge into yours
  • Green light? Check for red-light runners before going

Highway Driving Mastery

Higher speeds require better habits and awareness.

Merging Safely

Match highway speed on the ramp. Signal early. Find a gap. Merge smoothly—don't stop on the ramp!

Lane Discipline

Left lane for passing ONLY. Stay right except to pass. Don't camp in the left lane.

Passing Technique

Check blind spot. Signal. Pass quickly but safely. Return to right lane. Signal again.

Around Trucks

If you can't see their mirrors, they can't see you. Give trucks extra space—they need it to stop.

Fatigue Management

Break every 2 hours. Caffeine helps temporarily. Pull over if drowsy—rest areas exist for a reason.

Cruise Control

Great for long stretches. Don't use in heavy traffic or bad weather. Stay alert even with it on.

Driving in Different Weather

Weather changes everything. Adjust your driving accordingly.

Rain Driving

  • Reduce speed 5-10 mph—roads are slippery when first wet
  • Turn on headlights (not just DRLs) for visibility
  • Avoid puddles—hydroplaning happens above 35 mph
  • If hydroplaning: ease off gas, don't brake, steer straight
  • Increase following distance to 4-5 seconds

Snow & Ice

  • Slow down significantly—black ice is invisible
  • Accelerate and brake gently to avoid spinning
  • Bridges freeze first—extra caution on overpasses
  • If skidding: steer where you want to go, don't slam brakes
  • AWD helps you go, not stop. Still need winter tires!

Fog Driving

  • Use low beams ONLY (high beams reflect back)
  • Turn on fog lights if equipped
  • Follow road lines, not taillights ahead
  • Reduce speed drastically—visibility is everything
  • If too thick: pull off road completely, hazards on

High Winds

  • Grip steering wheel firmly with both hands
  • Expect gusts when passing trucks or buildings
  • SUVs and trucks more affected—take it slow
  • Watch for debris blown onto road
  • Be extra careful with trailers or roof cargo

City Driving & Parking

Navigate urban chaos like a pro.

Pedestrian Awareness

Always yield. Check crosswalks before turning. Watch for jaywalkers between cars.

Cyclists & Bikes

Give 3+ feet when passing. Check blind spot for bikes at lights. They have rights too!

Roundabouts

Yield to traffic already in circle. Signal when exiting. Go with flow, don't stop inside.

Parallel Parking Made Easy

1

Pull alongside front car, align mirrors

2

Reverse, turn wheel right

3

When at 45°, straighten wheel

4

Turn wheel left, finish backing in

Drive Smarter, Save Fuel

Small changes add up to big savings at the pump.

Smooth Acceleration

Pretend there's an egg under the gas pedal. Gradual inputs save 15-30% fuel.

Proper Tire Pressure

Underinflated tires cost 3% MPG per PSI low. Check monthly when cold.

Remove Excess Weight

Every 100 lbs reduces MPG by 1%. Clean out your trunk!

Aerodynamics

Close windows at highway speeds. Remove roof racks when not in use.

A/C Usage

A/C costs 5-25% MPG. Use it wisely. Windows down at low speeds, A/C at highway.

Maintenance

Clean air filter, fresh oil, and proper tune-up improve efficiency significantly.

Emergency Situations

Stay calm. Know what to do before it happens.

Critical Emergencies

Brake Failure

Pump brakes, downshift gears, use emergency brake gradually. Aim for soft barriers if needed.

Tire Blowout

Grip wheel firmly. DON'T brake hard. Ease off gas. Steer straight. Brake gently when slow.

Stuck Accelerator

Shift to neutral immediately. Brake normally. Pull over safely. Turn off engine.

Hood Flies Up

Look through gap below or out side window. Slow down gradually. Pull over safely.

After an Accident

  • 1
Check for injuries. Call 911 if needed.
  • 2
Move to safety if possible. Turn on hazards.
  • 3
Exchange info: names, insurance, license plates, photos.
  • 4
Take photos of all vehicles, damage, scene.
  • 5
Get witness contact info if available.
  • 6
File police report. Contact insurance ASAP.

Advanced Driving Techniques

Want to take your skills to the next level? These techniques are used by professional drivers.

Look Ahead

Your car goes where your eyes look. Focus 12-15 seconds ahead, not just in front.

Smooth Inputs

Gradual steering, throttle, and braking. Abrupt inputs upset the car's balance.

Racing Line

Outside-inside-outside through corners. Straightens the curve for better speed.

Weight Transfer

Braking shifts weight forward (grip). Acceleration shifts back. Use it to your advantage.
